How We Defeat Roof Moss
A look at our work procedures
What You Can Expect
- The customer contacts us to arrange a quote.
- If the customer is unable to be at the property during daylight hours to give us access to the rear/side of the property, we may be able to assess the roof from the public footpath, the front of the property or with a drone.
- A detailed written quote is provided to the customer electronically. This may include optional extras.
- Covers and tarpaulins are laid over the customer’s garden areas.
- Access equipment is erected, this may include access towers to gutter height, harnesses and other specialist equipment, including roof ladders.
- The gutters are disconnected from the rainwater pipes or temporarily blocked.
- The moss is removed with brushes and scrapers.
- Any chipped or broken tiles are photographed and replaced within the limit set in the written quotation. Additional damaged tiles are replaced at extra cost as stated in the quote (we always set a limit and never charge for additional work above this without the customer’s consent).*
- We clear out the gutters of moss and debris and if required any rainwater pipes to ground level (we can’t unblock underground pipework, soakaways etc).
- The gutters are tested for leaks with water. Photos are taken if any leaks are detected.
- The general condition of the roof is visually assessed and photos are taken of any required remedial work such as poor mortar work, rotten timber fascias, issues with chimneys, roof windows or roof flashings etc.
- A moss inhibitor is then applied to the tiles and the gutters reconnected to the rainwater pipes.
- The access equipment is lowered, moss is bagged up and the area tidied.
- The moss is disposed of at a commercial waste yard where it’s mixed with other organic/garden materials and recycled.
- The customer is supplied with an invoice sent electronically for the amount agreed upon with details of accepted payment methods.
- The customer is supplied with the roof assessment and photos of the roof, inc any defects to chimneys, mortar work, roof flashings, roof windows etc.
- Upon payment, an acknowledgement email is sent and we will follow up in 12-24 months time to ask if the customer would like the roof sprayed again to prevent the moss from growing back. We recommend this as it’s cheaper to keep the moss under control than to have the roof cleaned again.
*Most roofs in the UK have at least one chipped tile so we charge an agreed price per tile with a hard limit (eg £40 total) so the customer isn’t hit with unexpected charges. We will never carry out work above this limit without the customer’s consent and will photograph any broken tiles in situ.
