Why is Moss Growth so Bad Compared to the Past?
Moss thrives on shaded, damp, wet and rough surfaces such as patios, driveways, paths, tarmac and roof tiles.
Here are a few reasons why it may seem worse now than in the past:
1) Less Pollution
Moss, algae and lichen are very sensitive to pollution and the UK has taken steps over the last decade or so to reduce the number of pollutants that enter the atmosphere and may come down in the rain. Diesel vehicles now have particulate filters, the UK’s coal power stations have closed down, ULEZ schemes are in effect and many aerosols have been banned. Scientists even study moss and lichens as an indicator of air quality.
2) Less Sunlight
If tree branches have grown and now block sunlight, the roof will stay damp for longer and moss will thrive.
3) Your Roof Tiles Now Have a Rougher Surface
As roof tiles weather from rain, snow, ice and UV rays over the years, the surface becomes rougher and worn out. Moss thrives on rough surfaces so you may be seeing more moss now as the surface of your tiles isn’t as smooth as in the past.
4) Moss is Migrating
Moss is spread by microscopic spores that blow around in the wind. Even if you have your roof or patio etc treated, these spores will migrate from neighbouring properties and start to grow on your property. Hence why we suggest having your roof re-treated every 18 months to keep this growth in check.
